Donate to the Montana Jewish Project

All donations made to the Montana Jewish Project are tax

deductible under current IRS laws.  MJP is incorporated as a religious non-profit in the State of Montana. However, if you’d prefer or need to donate only to an organization with 501 (c) (3) status, this is easy to do. Learn more about MJP’s fiscal sponsor.

What is the status of MJP’s 501 (c) (3) status?

MJP filed for 501 (c) (3) status in July, 2021. Unfortunately, the IRS has a 2-year waitlist to make determinations.

I need or want to make my donation to a 501 (c) (3) organization, and MJP can’t wait two years to reacquire Montana’s first synagogue for our statewide Jewish community and cultural center!

Not to worry. MJP is working with a fiscal sponsor (sometimes called a fiscal agent.) This is a common practice. A fiscal sponsor is another non-profit organization—with its own 501 (c) (3) status already—which provides fiduciary oversight, financial management, and other services until a non-profit like MJP receives its determination from the IRS. The fiscal sponsor will hold all donations in a separate account until we are officially recognized as a 501 (c) (3) organization. The fiscal sponsor cannot use your donations. Your donation to our fiscal sponsor means your generous gift goes to a 501 (c) (3) organization—and only to MJP.

Who is MJP’s fiscal sponsor?

Bishop Vetter of Helena generously offered to serve as MJP’s fiscal sponsor until we receive our 501 (c) (3) determination from the IRS. We are reacquiring the historic synagogue from the Bishop of Helena. Your donation to MJP using the Diocese of Helena as a fiscal sponsor will not be used by any organization other than MJP. All donations are being held in a separate account, which MJP monitors.

I made a donation and just got an IRS letter from the Diocese of Helena. Is my donation intended for MJP going to support the Diocese?

No, the letter or email you received from the Diocese is legal formality. As our fiscal sponsor, they provided that letter for your taxes. In this letter, you will read that your donation is being held for the Montana Jewish Project. All funds are held in a separate account for MJP and will be used only by MJP.

How do I donate to MJP using your fiscal sponsor?

You have two options. If you want to write a check, make it out to the “Diocese of Helena” and write “Montana Jewish Project” in the subject line. Please mail checks to MJP: Montana Jewish Project; PO Box 491; Helena, MT, 59624. We will record them, and then mail them to our fiscal sponsor. If you would rather donate online, follow the link for 501 (c) (3) donations.

If you are using a donor-advised fund, please take the following steps:

Your donor-advised fund can search for our fiscal sponsor using either the name (Diocese of Helena) or Employment Identification Number (EIN). Please search only using the EIN (#81-0231797). There are several non-profit organizations based around the Catholic Church in Helena. It is easiest and most straightforward to search using our fiscal sponsor’s EIN (#81-0231797).
